EJ (formerly East Jordan Iron Works) a world leader in cast
iron components, provided eight sample Truncated Domes to
Heat Treat Info, Inc.
for processing. Seven of the samples
were “green” un-coated, one of the samples was (asphalt dip coated) the
current EJ standard coating.
The seven “green” samples were then processed. One of
each sample received one of the following coatings
Ultrawear®, UltrawearPlus®,
Ultrawear® Green, Red, Yellow and Black,
the seventh sample was left un-coated.
The eight samples were placed into a certified Salt Fog
Test Chamber. An accelerated corrosion test per the (ASTM B-117) standard
was begun. The Test was conducted by an independent A2LA accredited
laboratory.
Per the standard the samples were heated to 95°F inside
the cabinet and exposed to a 5% sodium solution “Salt Fog”. The test chamber
is opened every 24 hours and the samples are inspected and photographed (see
attached). The test samples are considered a failure when more than 10% of
the significant surface area is covered by either “White” or “Red”
corrosion. All eight samples were tested for the same period of time 168
hours.

Conclusion:
The
UltrawearPlus®
coatings and Ultrawear® processed
samples exhibited excellent corrosion resistance vs. both the Asphalt-coated
(EJIW standard coating) and Un-coated test samples.
UltrawearPlus® and
Ultrawear® are diffusion heat hreating
and coating processes that exhibit both excellent wear and corrosion
resistance. Because they are not surface coatings I.E. Powder-Coating,
E-Coating or Plating, they are much more durable. The surface hardness of
both UltrawearPlus® and
Ultrawear® on cast iron is Rockwell HRC
58/60 and is diffused into the cast iron thus becoming part of the cast iron
substrate.
